Name, Pronouns and Role:
Sangavi Sugumar (she/her), Copy Editor
Fun fact:
I frequently daydream about running away to a cottage in the forest, where I can bake and grow flowers and maybe have one visitor every three months.
What does intersectional feminism mean to you?
Intersectional feminism encompasses so much of what I believe in, but for me it’s primarily a community and a place of support, somewhere to rise and rest and resist. As a movement, intersectionality recognises what is and what could be, and works to bridge that gap. It fights to create a better space for those of us so frequently left behind, and the world it dreams of is one I hope to live in someday.
What is your favourite thing about Clitbait?
How could I possibly choose just one?! Watching this community grow has been wonderful, but I’ve especially loved how much it’s flourished since lockdown. In a time when connecting with others has become essential and impossible, the Creative Collectives managed it brilliantly – they embodied the warm and vibrant natures of everyone involved, and lifted my spirits massively. I’m unbelievably proud to be part of this group of people.
What inspires you?
Kindness, to other people and yourself – especially given the society we live in, and the way many of us were raised, I value kindness and compassion more than anything. Very likely quoting something on Tumblr here, but there is genuine grace in being kind when everything else pushes you to cruelty.
What things do you do outside Clitbait that you are proud of?
Baking, which is something I’m pretty good at (!) and appreciate much more since I had to go without flour and eggs for so long. I’m quite proud of doing less academic work, and instead spending more time talking to my friends or simply resting.
A guilty feminist confession?
I don’t really have one. I mean, a lot of things spring to mind, but I reject the guilt! I’m doing the best I can, and learning as I go along.
A personal feminist triumph?
Learning to be more selfish with my time and energy. Also, last time a man told me to smile, I just looked at him until he went away. It was great.
