Bodies and self image – turning the negative into positive

As an artist and body positivity activist I curated a photoshoot shot by Matt Brown, with fellow models and activists in a series of images where each woman chose a word which began with ‘un’ that could be seen as positive when those letters are removed…

The ‘Un’ series, turning negative words into positive and feeling empowered as a result

In a social media heavy world, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements telling us to change ourselves in order to be ‘happy’ which results in a lot of negativity around our image. We need to make sure that we find balance between the online and real life and to understand that what we see online isn’t real.

As an artist and body positivity activist I curated a photoshoot shot by Matt Brown, with fellow models and activists in a series of images where each woman chose a word which began with ‘un’ that could be seen as positive when those letters are removed. We each chose a word and then painted them on our bodies with the ‘un’ crossed out – leaving only the positive  part of the word. Successful, worthy, heard, realistic and seen are all words we should tell ourselves to uplift us and bring positivity into our mindsets. By removing the negativity we see the good and the potential to achieve anything we set our minds to!
Looking at the body and body inclusivity is a large part of my practice as an artist and I am always exploring this theme as I find it very interesting. As a millennial and as someone who has instagram and is constantly exploring images for inspiration – creating art with friends and people I am insured by is the best way for me to work.
